I Questioned Everything I was Taught About Kids. Here Are the Hills I’ll Die On.

Episode 10 | Heather DiNino | I Questioned Everything I was Taught About Kids. Here Are the Hills I’ll Die On.

For the first nine episodes of Self-Schooled, I've been asking other people the questions. But for episode 10, I'm turning the microphone around and sharing a little more about myself.

After more than 25 years studying, teaching, and learning about children—and becoming a parent and founding my own school—I've questioned a lot of what I was taught about parenting and education.

In this episode, I'm sharing the four non-negotiables that shape how I see children, how I parent, and how I teach. And why I believe questioning what we've been told is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves and our kids.

In this episode:

  • Why children's needs deserve to be understood and met, even when their behavior is challenging

  • What it means to honor the whole child, including their identity, differences, and individuality

  • Why I choose connection over control—and why that doesn't mean parenting without boundaries

  • Why letting our kids see us make mistakes, apologize, and be human matters

  • How science, personal experience, and intuition have shaped my evolving beliefs

You don't have to agree with my non-negotiables. In fact, I hope you'll question them.

Because the goal isn't to parent the way I do. It's to understand your own child, trust yourself, and find what works for your family.

I'd love to hear from you: What are your parenting non-negotiables? Come find me on Instagram and let's talk.
